Lira Musikmagasin 2019, av Magnus Östnäs.
Kammarfrijazz.

Chamber free jazz. Mildly secretive chamber-free jazz at an intersection between the free and the written. Bassist Georgia Wartel Collins is responisble for the compositions that breathe both Coltrane and Gullin. Tenor saxophonists and clarinetist Karl Hjalmar Nyberg and drummer Andreas Winther complete the trio, which has its own meditative sound where small side stories take place in the subdivisions. Introductory Omma is an organically growing composition where Nyberg gets to show off in the solo playing. Lydia is such an airy Gullin poem with a baritone feel that turns into an important melodic bass ostinato before Nyberg enters a bright, slightly cheeky tenor position, during the whole Winther supports and fills in a light, tasteful way. Furiously elegant! Now all the record company Hoo-Ha can go to the spartan website and tell more about Aila tio.

I vaddå? Förtvivlan?

A new record label and for me the Aila trio was a surprise. A fairly calm, reasoning jazz of perhaps a Swedish brand. I notice the ingenious songs signed by Georgia Wartel Collins. Slightly undulating, thoughtful- Inside each piece, the base moves in elastic lines. It is a special adventure to listen to how she embroiders, varies, creates tension. It does not take much to electrify the songs, but with the bass as a singing center, it sounds nice as the other instruments pull towards the outer edges. It swings secretly in an introverted and thoughtful way. And when the bass emerges from the relaxed undulating interaction and takes a solo in Francis, time stops. Just like when she dances out the music in Sångklockor to
still ecstasy. The second album is in its way more predictable. Jonny Wartel's sharp saxophone playing meets Döner's trumpet. Of course, this record excels in several sounds and a lot of surprises on the horn side. Döner is on the one hand a compliant classical trumpet player with a wonderfully large tone and on the other hand a sound doctor who scalpel-likely cuts out pieces of sound for the others to nibble on. The result is heavy wonderfully pointed free jazz of modern design. I had expected that. Thanks. But the more I listen to Aila trio, the more those bass lines spin in my head that the fellow musicians so sensitively almost sense around. And often the scarcity is praised in the confidence that restraint is the best flame in the soul of music. I did not expect this - and I am completely sold. Finally: all this melancholy, it has to do with the present. Because it is not uncomplicated, sometimes it lacks but never in rage. In what? Despair?

Georgia Wartel Collins and Karl Hjalmar Nyberg are just two of many examples of young Swedish jazz musicians who have come to Norway to study and who have stayed here. We should be happy about that. For a number of years now, both the jazz departement in Trondheim and the jazz education at the Norwegian Academy of Music have functioned almost like flypaper on hopeful students from a number of countries - not least Sweden. Very many have also become settled here in the birthplace of giants and contributed greatly when it comes to modern, innovative jazz. So does the Aila trio where bassist Georgia Wartel Collins, who has written all the material, and tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Karl Hjalmar Nyberg who have allied themselves with drummer and percussionist Andreas Winther from Ålesund. All three have either studied or studies at the legendary jazz department in Trondheim and we have encountered all three in various exciting bands in recent years, including in JUNO, Megalodon Collective and Kjetil Milelid Trio. This is where the trio comes with their debut and it elegantly joins the ranks where the composed meets the free. In this chordless and open trio, Wartel Collins' songs are a great starting point for three very listening and empathetic musicians who only want to do each other and the music well. The music is often melodic and searching. It also has a melancholy pull over it and the three strong players make it beautiful and exciting. Aila trio simply has, something very unique to say.
